Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung

South Africa is one of the world’s most unequal societies. Social disparities and social and political discontentment provoke protests which culminated in the Marikana Massacre among striking miners but also in notorious demonstrations of the service delivery sector in several townships or the recent and ongoing student protests for free education.

The seminar offers an introduction to different concepts of social movement research such as Collective Behaviour, Ressource Mobilization, Political Opportunity Structures, Collective Identity or Framing theory and discusses the theoretical approaches against the backdrop of selected protests in Africa, with focus on South Africa.
