Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung

Currents debates in African studies either on development policy or on the question social change refer to self-organisation. Especially in development policy the concept of self-organisation is linked to self-help, to non-governmental organisations or in a more generalised political perspective to the notion of civil society. This implies that self-organisation follows (or should follow) the main principles of Western development policy. However, self-organisation covers much more phenomena than those promoted by Western development aid. We find religious movements based on Christianity, Islam or African religions, the renaissance of local forms of authority, socio-political networks based on ethnic origin or common military experience, or rebel movements to name but a few.
The seminar will link current scholarly debates of self-organisation in wider sense with the ongoing empirical work of masterstudents in Bayreuth.
